Mission Malawi 2006
29th Nov 2005

Michelle's on a Mission

In March 2006 Michelle Reid, Chief Executive of George House Trust, will fly to Africa to embark on a gruelling 10-day triathlon, cycling 450km in 35-degree heat, kayaking across Lake Malawi (crocodiles included!) and hiking up Mount Mulanje, the highest mountain in Southern tropical Africa, in order to raise money for HIV projects in Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Mission Malawi II, a team of 40 men and women from Manchester and London, are attempting to raise £120,000 to fund ActionAid projects which are helping to look after thousands of orphans who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS.

An avid supporter of the first Mission, Michelle decided to take part in Mission Malawi 2 on behalf of George House Trust, since the organisation supports many people from both Malawi and Zimbabwe. “It may seem like its a problem that's far away, but George House Trust works with many people from Malawi who are now living here in the North West. Malawi has one of the highest incidences of HIV in Africa, and almost 1 in 7 adults are currently living and dying with HIV. It is also now undergoing one of the worst famines in its history. All the money we raise will go towards projects which help to alleviate the pain and suffering faced by men, women and children every day. But we can’t do this without you, so please give us all the support you can to help us all make a real difference.”

The first Mission Malawi expedition took place in 2004 and raised £40,000. This money has been distributed to three ActionAid supported projects in northern Malawi. Mission Malawi II, the brainchild of Radio 3 Producer Les Pratt, aims to raise more money this time around, in order to support projects across Malawi and Zimbabwe. We’re holding a number of fundraising events in Manchester and London over the next few months. If you would like to help raise funds please contact us.

If you would like to sponsor Michelle please visit her webpage at her JustGiving page or contact her at George House Trust on 0161 274 4499.

Don’t forget, you can still buy the Mission Malawi Calendar 2006. It’s a fabulous stocking filler, and at only £8 you can afford to be generous to all your friends.

"Mission Malawi is an excellent cause, and will draw some much needed attention to Actionaid's work with HIV/Aids sufferers in Africa. The expedition sounds pretty gruelling, but I'm sure the team will rise to the challenge. I just wish I could go with them…sort of!" Dermot O’Leary, TV presenter

"Go! Mission Malawi! With wheels on fire and all hearts fixed on the finish line and the end of Aids - I send you all my love and support." Joanna Lumley, Actress

"A triathlon is certainly a great challenge, but it's nothing compared to the daily challenge facing the sick and dying in Malawi. I know you are being asked to support more and more charities these days, but its only because there can never be enough help. So please fight the charity fatigue and think about why you are being asked and why it is needed...and trust me your help is needed - so please give generously." Craig Doyle, TV presenter.

"I was horrified to hear that the rate of HIV infection in Africa has reached such epidemic proportions. What the Mission Malawi team are doing is an enormous undertaking, so please help them as much as you can. Every penny counts, I say, every penny counts!" John Savident, Actor

"This triathlon sounds absolutely gruelling, but it should be enormous fun. I only wish I could go with them for the ride! The HIV crisis in Africa is already out of hand, and getting worse by the day. Something has to be done fast, and the Mission Malawi team have made huge sacrifices to bring this pandemic to our attention. Please do all you can to help, by sponsoring them or by offering to help in any way you can.” James Hickman, Olympic and Commonwealth swimmer
