GHT Homepage Inside GHT Announcements GHT at Manchester Pride 2005
22nd Aug 2005
Once again George House Trust is a key partner in Manchester Pride - the cities lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans festival.
The Pride Parade
Saturday 27August 2005
Assemble for 1.00pm behind the MEN Arena
The Pride Parade through Manchester City Centre is guaranteed to be even bigger and better than in previous years. As usual, George House Trust will be using the opportunity to put the message across that HIV is still a key part of Pride, that in 20:05 it is time for action on HIV, and to say thank you yet again for all your support. If you’re interested in joining us on or alongside our float (stickering, waving flags, collecting etc) then let us know before the weekend or just turn up to the start of the parade before 12.30pm!
If you’d rather just watch, look out for something big, white and loud!
Lifestyle Expo
Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Back of Chorlton Street Coach Station
The popular Lifestyle Expo takes place for the third year running this year behind Chorlton Street coach station in the Village.
George House Trust will be there every day during the big weekend and you’ll be able to:
- find out more about becoming a GHT volunteer
- find out how to support Victoria Wood’s appeal for funds by making a small donation every month to GHT
- join our team for the 2006 Great Manchester Run (you’ve eight months to train!)
- support the Stop AIDS Campaign “we’re watching you” initiative for G8 Leaders
- learn about GHT’s work supporting people with HIV and our current campaigns.
In the lifestyle expo we will also have two special stalls jointly with our partners the Lesbian and Gay Foundation. The myhivtest.org stall will be giving you a chance to have a look at the website and at new packs which have been designed for people who’ve just had an HIV test (there are packs for people with a positive result and for people with a negative result). At the Operation Fundraiser stall you’ll be able to find out more about becoming an Operation Fundraiser volunteer, and how you can help us this World AIDS Day by taking a red-ribbon box to your workplace, college or neighbourhood.
Market Place
Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Chandos Car Park, Brazil Street Manchester
If you don’t make it to the Lifestyle Expo then we’ve also got a GHT team in the Market Place at this year’s new location off Brazil Street (over the Canal behind Eden Bar). GHT volunteers will be on hand with all our information and campaigns – and unlike the other stalls its all free!
Operation Fundraiser
The Big Weekend
Box Office – Aytoun Street/Minshull Street Manchester
Of course the Big Weekend is one huge charity fundraising event. George House Trust and the Lesbian and Gay Foundation have worked together again this year through Operation Fundraiser to sell the tickets for the Big Weekend. Tickets (which have been £10 for months and months) have now gone up to £15 for the weekend or £10 for the day. Operation Fundraiser’s box office is open 10am – 2.00am every day. Yet again you can be completely confident that the money is going to charity – the money for the Big Weekend goes straight to Operation Fundraiser, we then pay Pride a contribution for some of the Big Weekend costs (fencing, security, cleansing etc) and then 100% of the money is distributed to charities – 50% to HIV projects and 50% to LGBT projects.
The Big Weekend is the UK’s biggest lesbian and gay fundraising event and something as a community we should be rightly proud of.
Vigil and Closing Ceremony
Monday 29 August 2005
Sackville Park, Sackville Street Manchester
George House Trust is yet again the sponsor and organiser of the Pride Vigil and Closing Ceremony. The annual vigil takes place in Sackville Park, the home to the UK’s only permanent memorial to HIV, the Beacon of Hope.
The candlelit vigil is the moving finale to the whole festival, and this year will include music, poetry and words from special guests. The vigil and festival are brought to a fitting close with a minutes silence to remember all those lost to HIV and living with HIV. All the money collected at the Vigil goes to Operation Fundraiser so please give generously.
For health and safety reasons we have been instructed that the capacity of the park is limited and entry to the park will be on a strictly first come basis. We apologise for this restriction but it is for your own safety and the safety of others attending the vigil.
