World AIDS Day 1 December 2005
1st Dec 2005

World AIDS Day 2005 in Greater Manchester

What do people in the UK think about HIV/AIDS?

HIV/AIDS Facts and Myths in the UK.

Many people think, because they have been hearing about the AIDS epidemic for so many years, that it’s not a problem – they’ve stopped listening.
People may assume that the information campaigns have worked, and that HIV is only a danger to ‘high risk’ groups of the population, and less of a danger now than in the past.

Outside of the London region, the North West has the highest number of HIV positive people in UK. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) estimates that in the UK there were 53,000 adults living with HIV at the end of 2003 – over a quarter were unaware that they were HIV positive.
New cases of HIV continue to rise in the region. In recent years new HIV cases have been split roughly evenly between heterosexual men and women and gay men

Globally, there are now over 40 Million with HIV.
30 Million have died.

= 14,000 a day,
= 583 an hour,
= 10 each minute,
= one person every 6 seconds.

Making a difference…
The theme of Worlds AIDS Day 2005 is
STOP AIDS – Keep the Promise

Each of us can make a difference to combat the spread of this pandemic.
Giving money to HIV initiatives, volunteering, lobbying for cheap drugs to be made available in the developing world or campaigning to end discrimination are all part of combating HIV.
